Community VBS begins tomorrow

The Make Waves Mathews Community Church Vacation Bible School will be held this weekend, beginning Friday at 6 p.m. at the Mathews Boys and Girls Club. A total of eight Mathews churches will be participating.

“A lot of churches don’t have a lot of kids,” said organizer Amber Williams about the reasoning for holding one large VBS instead of several smaller camps.

Last fall, Williams and Carolyn Rowe, co-directors of the children’s ministry program at Salem United Methodist Church, Diggs, were planning for the next year’s children’s programs. The two were stumped on what to do about a summer VBS and decided to pray on it.

Williams’s children attend RelKids at Relevant Church in Mathews. In November, Williams approached the church about holding a joint VBS. The church jumped at the opportunity and soon Bethel United Methodist and New Point Chapel were on board as well. Kingston Parish, Kingdom Covenant, Macedonia Baptist and Mathews Chapel Methodist also decided to join.
