Committee members, new CG chief take look at navigational markers

Mathews Waterways Committee members braved snow and choppy seas on Tuesday to take the new chief of Coast Guard Station Milford Haven on a tour of Davis Creek and Hole in the Wall to look at the remaining federal channel markers.

Waynie Hudgins of Bavon volunteered his workboat for the trip to the entry channel of Davis Creek, where only two usable channel markers remain. A third channel marker is directly in the middle of the channel, which has moved since the last dredging project many years ago, and Chief Rob Shores, making his first trip to the creek, assured committee members that the marker would be removed sometime in February.

Shores said he’s only been in Mathews for two weeks, and he wants to get a beat for the waterways and come to an understanding of what local residents want so he can fulfill their needs while making sure the waterway is safe.

“Whatever that middle ground is, is where we want to be,” he said.
