Commissioners consider long-term plans for solar facilities

The Gloucester Planning Commission indicated that it wants more information about solar energy facilities before it can make long-term plans for such use in the county.

Commissioner James Gray suggested that Strata Solar, which received a conditional use permit to build a solar facility on Route 14 near Waverley Lane, attend an upcoming meeting to explain more about what an applicant might need from the county in its future planning for solar energy.

Also, Gray said that a representative from Dominion should be invited to a meeting to give commissioners some input about where in Gloucester future solar farms could be located. Strata Solar said it selected its Route 14 site, in part, because it is close to a main Dominion electric power line.

Gray asked how many sites in Gloucester are even suitable for utility-scale solar projects.
