The U.S. Coast Guard is continuing to accept comments from concerned residents on the proposed downgrade of Station Milford Haven in Mathews from full-time to seasonal status.
According to a press release from Rep. Rob Wittman (R-Montross), the comment period will end on Sunday, Sept. 22.
“Folks along the coast of the Chesapeake Bay know our waters are the lifeblood of our communities,” said Wittman in the release. “Those out on the water during the coldest months of the year must have a reliable source of timely rescue, should they find themselves in an emergency situation.”
Wittman pointed out that the need is “all the more essential” during months when hypothermia “can kill within minutes.” Mentioning the public meeting he held on the matter earlier this month in Mathews, he said he has urged the Coast Guard to reconsider its proposal.
As of Monday, around 50 area residents had commented in the Federal Register website regarding the downgrade to Milford Haven.
