A combined Little League Junior Softball team from Mathews and Middlesex counties defeated Lancaster two games to none Friday and Saturday to capture the District 15 Junior League Softball Championship and advance to the state tournament which begins this weekend.

The girls, ages 12-14, will play in the state tournament on July 5-10 at the Caroline County Little League field. Opening ceremonies in the double-elimination tournament will be held Friday, with the first games Saturday morning.

The Mathews-Middlesex girls defeated Lancaster in Friday night’s opener by a 13-2 margin and 12-2 on Saturday afternoon. They were the only two teams competing.

Mathews played host to both the Junior League Softball and Senior League Baseball tournaments this past weekend.

In Senior League Baseball, Mathews fell to the eventual champions from Middlesex in the first round, 9-1, and lost by a 9-7 margin to King William in the elimination bracket.
