Coleman Bridge work results in traffic delays

Single-lane southbound closures on the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge were necessary Sunday so that maintenance crews could perform electrical and mechanical work to the span. Several additional single-lane closures will be held between now and July, state transportation officials said.

The bridge remained fully operational throughout the scheduled work period from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to Virginia Department of Transportation spokesperson Jennifer Gwaltney. Sunday was selected for the work because of lower traffic volumes generally recorded on that day, she said. Maritime traffic was also impacted.

Two 30-minute southbound traffic stops were necessary, Gwaltney said, one at midmorning and the second about noon, to allow crews to reposition equipment.
