Coleman Bridge tests to cause delays tomorrow

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will perform routine maintenance tests on the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. tomorrow (Wednesday, Feb. 9).  Motorists should expect delays during the testing, according to VDOT spokesperson Nora Chivers.

Crews will test the hydraulic systems used to open and close the bridge, as part of routine maintenance, Chivers said. Test closures are required during daylight hours to effectively assess test results, and VDOT attempts to schedule maintenance during travel periods when traffic volumes are lower, to reduce impact to motorists, she added.

Chivers said motorists should not experience delays in excess of a standard bridge opening. For motorists who prefer to use an alternate route, the most direct route is approximately 75 miles through West Point.
