Cole to chair Mathews board in 2011

O.J. Cole was elected chairman and Janine Burns vice chairman during Tuesday’s organizational meeting of the Mathews County Board of Supervisors.

The board also set meeting dates and times for the coming year, with meetings to be held the fourth Tuesday of each month, except for November and December, when they will be held on the third Tuesday.

With some discussion, the board decided to alternate times, as it did last year, with 1 p.m. meetings in odd-numbered months and 7 p.m. meetings in even-numbered months.

Supervisor Neena Putt said that the alternating time schedule is a good idea because it gives some residents an opportunity to attend meetings, but pointed out that it hasn’t increased attendance. Supervisor Charles Ingram said the schedule interfered with VDOT’s attendance at meetings and that if the problem continues the board should go back to day meetings next year.
