Clean Water Act overview provided at MPPDC dinner meeting

The Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission held a dinner meeting Oct. 24 at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, Gloucester Point.

MPPDC executive director Lewis Lawrence presented an overview of the Federal Clean Water Act. Lawrence described how the Chesapeake Bay Tributaries Plan, Chesapeake Bay Watershed Implementation Plans, and Stormwater Management Integrations under the 2012 House Bill 1065 converge and what specific actions local government must take.

Also, Dr, John T. Wells, dean and director of VIMS, said that he is grateful and welcomes the partnership and support that MPPDC has extended to VIMS.

The commission viewed "Ocean Frontiers," a film which illustrated new approaches to ocean and coastal management. Lawrence said that the Middle Peninsula is "struggling in responding to cleaning up the (Chesapeake) Bay." He also said that "communities need to find common ground to move forward in the cleanup."
