Clay Bank structure fire

No injuries were reported as a result of a structure fire Tuesday afternoon at Clay Bank. Members of both the Gloucester and Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue squads responded to the blaze, which occurred just after noon on Clay Bank Road. Upon arrival, firefighters witnessed flames coming from a garage apartment. GVFRS spokesperson Hanna Carson said members worked quickly to extinguish the blaze on what was left of the garage and conduct overhaul operations. She said its resident was not home at the time of the fire and said the structure was a total loss. GVFRS responded with five engines, one rescue truck, a tanker, an ambulance and approximately 18 volunteers. AVFRS responded mutual aid with a tanker and personnel. Units remained on scene for nearly three hours; the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Carson said. Photo by Quinton Sheppard ...
