Churches, businesses open doors, hearts on Thanksgiving

Abingdon Episcopal Church, White Marsh, has opened its doors to the community on Thanksgiving Day for more than 20 years.

This year will be no different as the church will provide a free full Thanksgiving Day meal from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. today to anyone who desires to come for fellowship. Abingdon joins several other churches and businesses special community outreaches.

According to church secretary Wendy Every, community Thanksgiving dinners began as a way to reach out to the community and fill a void in people’s lives who may have found themselves dining alone on the holiday.

“We knew there were people in the community with nowhere to go for Thanksgiving,” Every said.

She said the outreach is not necessarily just for those who may be unable to afford the traditional Thanksgiving Day fare, but is open to anyone. “We found there are a lot of elderly in the community whose families have passed on, and they have nowhere to go,” she added.
