The upcoming school year in Mathews will be mostly online at first, but students will continue to need school supplies. The annual No Walls Community Day on Saturday, the 2020 version of an interfaith effort, saw 219 students outfitted with new backpacks crammed with supplies, at no cost to them.
They were handed out at Mathews High School.
Jason Hess of St. Thomas Anglican Mission, co-chair of this year’s event with Brett Isernhagen of Mathews Chapel United Methodist Church, said 16 churches made contributions to purchase and stuff the backpacks and to be sure this effort was carried on “despite the COVID-19 pandemic.”
Chick-fil-A of Gloucester provided lunch for the volunteers.
