Chris Hutson, Kevin Smith to lead Gloucester board in 2024

In its first meeting of the new year, the Gloucester County Board of Supervisors held its organizational meeting on Tuesday evening in the colonial courthouse, with Chris Hutson reelected as chairman and Kevin Smith elected vice chair.

In addition, the board appointed its members to serve as representatives to various boards and commissions.

Hutson was reelected chairman by a 7-1 margin, with Ashley Chriscoe voting against. Chriscoe, the board’s 2023 vice chairman, and Smith were each nominated for the vice chairman’s seat. Chriscoe’s nomination to be reelected as vice chair failed by a 2-5 vote, with the other vote coming from Phillip Bazzani. Smith was elected vice chair by a 5-2 vote.

Appointments

The board unanimously approved a number of appointments, as follows:

—Chriscoe to serve as the board’s representative to the Board of Social Services;

—Bazzani to Hampton Roads Planning District Commission;

—Bazzani, with Hutson as alternate, to the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization;

—Bazzani to Hampton Roads Military and Federal Facilities Alliance;

—Chriscoe to the Middle Peninsula Alliance;

—Chriscoe and newly elected supervisor Tony Nicosia to the Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission;

—Hutson to the Gloucester County Planning Commission;

—Smith, with Ken Gibson as alternate, to the Northern Neck Regional Jail Board;

—Dr. Robert “JJ” Orth to the Clean and Green Advisory Committee;

—Chriscoe to the Community Policy and Management Team;

—Orth to the Gloucester Economic Development Authority;

—Gibson to the Gloucester County Historical Committee;

—Chriscoe and Nicosia to the Local Emergency Planning Committee;

—Hutson and Chriscoe to the Middle Peninsula Chesapeake Bay Public Access Authority;

—Smith to the Middle Peninsula Community Criminal Justice Board;

—Gibson to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee;

—Orth to the Utilities Advisory Committee;

—Gibson to the Tourism Committee;

—Smith and Hutson to the Community Use of School Facilities Committee;

—Chriscoe to the Floodplain Management Committee;

—Smith to the Hazard Mitigation Management Team, and

—Hutson and Orth to the Transportation Planning Advisory Committee.
