Chowning to speak at 4th Friday event

Author Larry Chowning will be the guest speaker for the Guinea Heritage Association’s 4th Friday event at the C.B. Rowe & Son General Store Museum in Bena starting at 6 p.m. on Oct. 22.

A frequent visitor to Guinea, Chowning has written numerous books and articles on the area, boats and people. A native of Middlesex County, he is a staff writer for the Southside Sentinel and a contributor to National Fisherman magazine.

His books include “Barcat Skipper: Tales of a Tangier Island Waterman,” “Harvesting the Chesapeake,” “Chesapeake Legacy,” “Chesapeake Bay Buyboats,” “Deadrise and Cross-Planked” and his newest release, “Chesapeake Bay Deck Boats.”

Many people in the area know him, have his books in their homes and respect him for his commitment to research of the history of the Chesapeake Bay and the people who have and do work the waters surrounding our community and sharing this knowledge with others through his writing, a release stated.
