Chester resident dies in single-vehicle crash on Route 14

The Virginia State Police investigated a single-vehicle crash on Route 14 in Gloucester on Saturday that resulted in the death of the driver from Chester.

State police said the crash occurred at 5:35 p.m. on Route 14 eastbound, just west of Ware Neck Road. The driver of a 2009 Cadillac, Lorenzo Williams Jones Jr., was traveling at a high rate of speed in the curve of the roadway when he ran off the road and into the median.

Jones then over-corrected, state police said, and struck the guardrail. The vehicle then traveled over the guardrail into the tree line and struck several trees before overturning and ejecting the driver. State police said Jones was transported to Riverside Walter Reed Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

State police said it was unknown if alcohol was a factor in the crash and it was undetermined if Jones was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. Jones, 35, resided on Summer Arbor Lane in Chester.
This was the fifth traffic accident in Gloucester in 2021.
