Chesapeake Bay skipjack Sigsbee to visit Reedville in June

The Reedville Fishermen’s Museum will welcome the historic Chesapeake Bay skipjack Sigsbee to town on June 17-18. For those two days there will be two renowned skipjacks in town, the Sigsbee and the museum’s boat, Claud W. Somers. The Sigsbee will dock at the foot of Main Street at the Crazy Crab. The Sigsbee crew will offer deck tours and educational programs, free and open to the public. Hours to visit are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. June 17 and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. June 18. The museum, not usually open on Wednesdays, will be open that Wednesday, June 17, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., in addition to the usual Thursday-Saturday hours. Sigsbee, built in 1901, dredged oysters commercially for 88 years. After she was acquired by the Living Classrooms Foundation in 1990, a team of shipwrights and students rebuilt her. Today, she sails as a living classroom, teaching students about the ecology, history and economic importance of the Chesapeake Bay.
