Charlie “Bubba” Coates Jr., 67, of Hayes, died Sept. 14, 2017 at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital.

Charlie was a waterman and retired as a painter from Hall Construction. Charlie was kind, generous and loved his family. He was also a die-hard fan of sports, and he loved the New York Yankees and New York Giants. He will be missed by so many.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charlie Coates Sr., and sister, Barbara Jean Coates.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria Coates; mother, Edith Coates; daughter, Elizabeth Kellum; granddaughter, Whitney Bonniville; great-grandson, Riley Lane Ellis; brother, Calvin Coates; sisters, Betty Ann Hogge and Elaine Shackelford, and special niece, Lori Hogge.

Funeral service conducted by the Rev. Bill West was held at 12 noon Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017, at Groves Memorial Presbyterian Church. Interment followed in church cemetery. The family received friends Monday, Sept. 18, 2017, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.
