Charles William Hill, 72, of Hayes, died May 27, 2016 at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital.
William was a Gloucester native who grew up in a generation of hard-working men making a living on the water. He was a true waterman with a great love and respect for the water. William enjoyed western movies, and being with family and friends; and his most favorite thing was having his grandchildren and great-grandchildren with him. William loved to sit under the shade tree and on the porch. He was patient, generous and unfailingly kind. His family and friends loved him dearly and will miss him, but will keep his memories alive forever.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carbet and Catherine Hill; brothers, Samuel Hill and Robert Wayne Hill.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Hill; daughters, Teresa White and husband Timmy, Karen Townsend and husband Don, Debbie Smith and husband Tracey, and Sharon Jenkins and husband David; sisters, Goldie Rowe, and Mary West and husband Johnnie; brothers, Roger Hill and wife Barbara, and Billy Ray Hill and wife Dianne; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, and his faithful companion, Pork Chop.
A funeral service conducted by the Rev. Judy Stanley was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2016, at Groves Memorial Presbyterian Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends Tuesday, May 31, 2016, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.
The family expresses appreciation to the Abingdon Volunteer Rescue, and nephew James Hill and staff of Riverside Walter Reed Hospital for responding so promptly and caringly for William.
