CHARLES LINDBERG HURST

Charles Lindberg "Lindy" Hurst, 80, of Mathews, Va., went to be with the Lord on April 25, 2012.

He was born in Mathews (Moon), Va., on Jan. 26, 1932. He was preceded in death by his devoted and loving wife of 47 years, Mary Joan, whom he loved with every fiber of his being.

He is survived by his sons, who have lost their best friend, Charles David Hurst, Robert Anderton (Andy) Hurst and his wife Heidi, Scott Lynn Hurst and his wife Lynne; his grandchildren, Diana, Nathan, A.J., Lauren and Noah; his sister, Dorothy Mancha; his sister-in-law, Jeanette Hurst; his brother-in-law, Ralph Anderton and his wife Roni; special niece, Robin Dehoux, and many other wonderful nieces and nephews.

Lindy spent most of his working life as a piece-work counter and welder at Newport News Shipbuilding. He was also a veteran of the United States Army. Though he rarely spoke of it, Lindy was a star three-sport athlete at Mathews High School and played on the first football team ever formed there.

Lindy’s great joy in life was his family. He was also an avid fan of the North Carolina Tarheels (basketball), NASCAR, and the Washington Redskins. Lindy was a faithful member of Grace Providence United Methodist Church in Mobjack, Va.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 26, from 7-9 p.m. at Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews. A funeral service will be held on Friday, April 27, at 1 p.m. in Grace-Providence UMC. Burial will follow in Providence Cemetery, Miles, Va.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to our many friends, and especially to his home care providers, Laura West, Dorothy Allen, and Ginger Riley, for their loving care and kindness.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Grace-Providence UMC, 84 Grace Street, Foster, Va. 23056-2022.
