CHARLES L. ‘CHARLIE’ PALMER

Charles L.  “Charlie” Palmer, 99, formerly a resident of Seaford, Va., died Friday, April 1, 2016.

Born in Hopewell, Va., in 1916, he was the son of Dr. Raymond W. Palmer and Naoma R. Palmer, who later moved to Altavista, Va.

Charlie is survived by his son, Robert R. Palmer and his wife Mary of Midlothian, Va.; daughter, C. Lynn Ripley and her husband Robert of Gloucester, Va.; four grandchildren; one step grandchild, and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his loving and faithful wife of 73 years, Florine L. Palmer; brother R. Worthington Palmer of Altavista, and a son, Charles L. Palmer Jr. of Grass Valley, Cal.

Charlie was a resident of the Peninsula since 1936 and retired in 1981 from Newport News Shipyard as a Supervisor in the Main Machine Shop. A boating enthusiast, he was a member of Hampton Roads Power Squadron and U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 63. He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church and served as Trustee, was a member of the Administrative Board, the Maintenance Committee and the Visionary Committee. He attended the Adult Bible Class and United Methodist Men. 

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 10, 2016, at Zion United Methodist Church in Seaford with the Rev. David Magruder officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 1:30 p.m. in the church. Interment will be private.
