Champions

Mathews High School senior Jackson Putt holds aloft the Class 1 Region A trophy after defeating the West Point Pointers on Monday night in the championship game, which was held at MHS. With the win, the defending state Class 1 co-champions advanced to the state semifinal game against Altavista on Wednesday. Both the MHS boys and girls won regional titles on Monday—for the girls, it’s the first time since 1987, and although they made it to last year’s state tournament, this is the first time since 1980 the boys have been crowned regional champs.
