Cemetery cleanup

About 30 volunteers, armed with clippers, axes, rakes and other gardening implements, descended on New Point on Saturday, spending the day clearing away the shrubs and undergrowth that had taken over the historic and long-neglected Brooks cemetery. The project was led by the Fairfield Foundation, with funding coming from a Threatened Sites Grant from the Virginia Department of Historic Resources. The work will pave the way for continued documentation and preservation of the entire Brooks site, including archaeological testing around the house sites and mapping the cemetery, the foundation said.
