Celebration Saturday at Reed Birthplace

The 170th birthday of Dr. Walter Reed and the 200th anniversary of his birthplace will be celebrated with a special program from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Walter Reed Birthplace, which is located at the intersection of Routes 616 and 614 in Belroi.

In addition to tours of the house, visitors may participate in public archaeology work. Cheryl Dale, president of the Bay Quilters, will demonstrate period quilting and visitors will be invited to try their hand at the craft.

The Walter Reed Garden Club will exhibit 19th century flower arrangements. Riverside Walter Reed Hospital, which opened on Sept. 11, 1977 and is celebrating its 44th anniversary, will provide information on infection prevention in honor of Walter Reed’s contributions to public health.

The Gloucester Museum of History will have a booth on site and the Middle Peninsula Amateur Radio Club will be broadcasting live. Historical reenactors Dave Pondolfino and Katrina White-Brown will provide historical inter...
