CATHERINE BELVIN ASHE

Catherine Belvin Ashe, 94, of Gloucester Point, passed away peacefully Jan. 6, 2018 at the Gloucester House.

She graduated from Achilles High School, Class of 1941. Catherine had an unwavering faith in God, serving as a Sunday school teacher for more than 55 years and a charter member of Gloucester Point Baptist Church. Over the years she was very involved with her church and once commented that she had volunteered for every job in the church, but preach. She served as a Cub Scout leader for a number of years and held regularly scheduled meetings in her home.

From its inception, Catherine was a member and later an instructor with the Abingdon Volunteer Rescue Squad. In 1974, she retired after 33 years of federal civil service.  Following her retirement from the Naval Weapons Station, she and her late husband, Harry, continued to operate Ashe’s Nursery.  Catherine loved growing plants and sharing her gardening knowledge with everyone.

She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and will be deeply missed by her family.

She was preceded in death by husband, Harry T. Ashe Jr.; parents, Howard and Hazel Belvin; sisters, Doris B. Rowe, Frances B. Phillips and Hazel B. Rowe, and brother, Benny Belvin.

She is survived by her son, Tommy Ashe (Paulette); granddaughter, Melissa Ashe; grandson, Ryan Ashe (Amy); great-granddaughters, Alex Insley, Addison and Andi Ashe; sister, Sue B. Blake (Graham), and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services conducted by the Rev. Bud Goude were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018, at Gloucester Point Baptist Church. Interment followed in Gloucester Point Cemetery. The family received friends prior to the service from 10-11 at the church.

In Catherine’s memory, contributions may be given to Gloucester Point Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 305, Gloucester Point, Va. 23062.

The family wishes to extend their appreciation and gratefulness to the staff at the Gloucester House for the wonderful loving care given to Catherine and her family.
