CAROLYN JONES HERRINGTON

It is with heartfelt sorrow that we announce the passing of Carolyn Jones Herrington, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She peacefully left us on June 6, 2025, at her home on Cow Creek Mill Pond in Gloucester, Virginia.

Born on May 21, 1943, in Charleston, West Virginia, to Clarence and Genevieve Jones, Carolyn’s warmth, kindness, and vibrant spirit touched everyone she knew. She was the oldest of five siblings and was preceded in death by her parents.

Carolyn graduated from Poca High School in West Virginia in 1961. The following year, she married Robert Thayer Jr., and they moved to Gloucester in 1965, where they raised their two sons, Greg and Michael. In 2007, Carolyn married Ronald Herrington, adding more love to her life.

A dedicated public servant, Carolyn served as the Deputy Clerk for the Circuit Court of York County for over 33 years, retiring in 2015. She was also a faithful member of Petsworth Baptist Church, serving for many years, including as the church’s treasurer.

Carolyn was a talented cook and baker, renowned for her homemade rolls, chocolate pecan pie, coconut cake, and lemon bars. Her warm hospitality and delicious treats will be fondly remembered by family and friends.

She loved ballroom dancing, sewing, and interior decorating—talents she showcased by building three homes in Gloucester, each beautifully designed with her impeccable eye for style.

She is survived by her loving husband, Ronald Herrington; her sons, Greg (Gina) Thayer of Gloucester and Michael Thayer of Middlesex; grandchildren, Matthew Thayer, Afton Thayer, Nataleigh Thayer, and Sutton Herrington. She also leaves behind her siblings: sister, Patty (Steve) Fierbaugh of West Virginia; brothers, Sam Jones, Robert (Barbara) Jones of West Virginia, Clarence (Susan) Jones of Gloucester, and her stepson, Ronald Herrington II (Courtney) of Williamsburg.

A very special friend, Sylvia Clifton, was also dearly loved by Carolyn. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Tina West for her friendship and kindness to Carolyn.

A special thank you to Dr. Peter Zullo for his compassionate care and support.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Andrews Funeral Home & Crematory, 7192 Main Street, Gloucester. A celebration of life service will follow, conducted by the Rev. John Pouchot, at 12 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Petsworth Baptist Church, located at 2471 Hickory Fork Road, Gloucester, Va. 23061, or to other charities of your choice.
