CAROLYN BROWN STERLING

Carolyn Brown Sterling, 73, of Naxera, passed away April 1, 2016 at her home on Sterling Creek. 

Carolyn was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her mother, Naomi Dudley Brown; her father, Charles Herbert Brown Sr., and her brother, Charles Herbert Brown Jr.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Lester Sterling; her son, Chris Sterling, his wife Caron and granddaughter Hazel; her son, Brian Sterling, his wife Diana, grandsons Alec and Andrew.

She was a graduate of Gloucester High School, Class of 1961, and a 1965 graduate of Madison College with a B.S. degree in Elementary Education. She taught school in Hampton and Gloucester County for over 30 years. She was a dedicated and loving teacher who put her students first.

Carolyn enjoyed playing golf, playing cards, playing on her iPad, and doing Sudoku and crossword puzzles, along with an occasional trip to a casino. She was a great cook having learned from her mother and grandmothers. Her pies and her six layer chocolate cake were infamous.

She loved her family, her friends, and she dearly loved her three grandchildren. 

Carolyn was a lifelong member of Singleton United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, was a member of the United Methodist Women and the Willing Workers Class. Carolyn was, until recently, an active member of the York River Circle of The International Order of The King’s Daughters.

Carolyn leaves a legacy of being kind and helpful to all of the people she knew and met.

A celebration of the life of Carolyn will be conducted at 1 p.m. on April 8, 2016, at Singleton United Methodist Church in Schley. The family will visit with friends in the fellowship hall immediately following the memorial service.

Andrews Funeral Home and Crematory, Gloucester, is in charge of the arrangements. Interment will be private.
