CARL RAPHAEL SNYDER

Carl Raphael Snyder of Hayes, passed away as the result of long-term Alzheimer’s/dementia on May 2, 2024. Carl was born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, on September 6, 1934 to the late A. James E. and Minnie Nickel Snyder. Carl was very active in his St. Patrick Church, Carlisle, where he was a choir member. He also was a member of the Jaycees, The Elks Club of Carlisle, and owned a photography studio in Car-lisle for over 30 years. He continued his photography business on a smaller scale after moving to Virginia in 1981. Carl was primarily a wedding photographer for over 40 years and was privileged to have taken about 3,000 weddings during his photography career. Carl was a Past Faithful Navigator in the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus Assembly in Carlisle, and after moving to the Gloucester area, was a past Grand Knight in the Father Edmond P. McCarthy Council 9428, as well as a member of the Fourth Degree, Father P. Washington Assembly in Yorktown. He marched for years as an honor guard in many parades throughout the area. Carl and his wife were active in the Gloucester County Democratic Committee. He was also one of the “Gloucester 40.” He worked for several years at Food Lion. Carl was an active member at the Church of St. Therese, where he was humbled and honored to serve for many years as a Eucharist Minister. He took the First Communion photos for over 27 years and was the church’s unofficial photographer then. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of over 67 years, Patricia (February 10, 2022); his sister, Frances Snyder Fry, and his brothers, Lee R. Snyder and Ray M. Snyder, and half-brother, Ralph Webb. Carl is survived by his children, Carl R. Snyder Jr. (Buddy) and his wife Lisa, living in Pittsburgh, Pa.; his granddaughter, Auralia Snyder of Carlisle, and her children, Anastasia (Hector) Torres and Benjamin Garman; his daughter, Rebecca E. DiRosa and her husband, Alfred of Norfolk Va., with their two sons, Alfred III and Vincent Raphael DiRosa; his son, Stephen F. Snyder and his wife Kathy living in Hayes, and their two sons, Taylor and Connor, and his son, Matthew J. Snyder (Chasity), Kill Devil Hills, N.C. He loved and was loved by his many nieces, nephews and cousins. Carl would best be remembered by those at the Church of St. Therese as the man who whistled almost all the songs during Mass. A Memorial Mass for Carl has been scheduled at the Church of St. Therese, 6262 Main Street, Gloucester, Va. 23061, on Friday, May 10, at 12 p.m. A separate Mass and inurnment of Carl and Patricia will occur at St. Patrick Church/New Cemetery, Carlisle, at a later date. Carl’s family would like to express gratitude to Riverside Mathews Convalescent Center for their welcoming care for our father during the most difficult medical times in our nation’s history.
