CARL MELVIN DIZE SR.

Carl Melvin Dize Sr. departed this life on April 17, 2018 after a brief illness. 

Born on Tangier Island on June 17, 1921, Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Florence; sister, June Doxtader, and twin babies, Carl and Cathy. After the August storm of 1933, Carl and his family moved to Urbanna and made his home there for 84 years.

Carl enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1941 serving as an engineer aboard several ships including the USS Menges. He participated in the Battle of the Atlantic during World War II where his ship sustained damage from being torpedoed. Following his military service, Carl worked at the Naval Weapons Station in Yorktown for 35 years, retiring in 1978. Carl was a member of the Urbanna United Methodist Church for 84 years. A lifelong member of the Urbanna Masonic Lodge #83, he also served as its Chaplain for over 35 years. In addition, he was a member of the Gloucester Disabled Veterans Association.

Carl is survived by his children, Sue Carper (John), Chip Dize (Sandra) and Cathy Jesse (Roy). He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Sara Anderson (David), Johnny Carper (Megan), Luke Dize (Susan), Matthew Dize (Ali), Elizabeth Marshall, Laura Browder (T.J.), Olivia Jessie, and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 21 at 11 a.m. in Urbanna United Methodist Church followed by a reception. Interment will be in Middlesex Memorial Cemetery, Urbanna. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Friday at Faulkner Funeral Home, Bristow-Faulkner Chapel, Saluda, with Masonic Rites at 7 o’clock.
