Cappahosic, one of Gloucester County’s distinguished historic houses, will be the setting for the Fairfield Foundation’s eighth annual Historic House Party, a fundraiser supporting its public archaeology and educational outreach programs.
The party will take place from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, May 30. Sponsors and guests will enjoy food catered by Shirley “Shelly” Williams, along with music, tours of the house, and archaeology exhibits.
“This is an excellent opportunity to visit a charming 18th-century house and enjoy some of Gloucester County’s rich history. Your support of this event helps sustain our educational activities and share the past with the public,” said David Brown, co-director with Thane Harpole of the Fairfield Foundation.
Tickets are available at $75 per person ($50 is tax-deductible). Sponsorships for the event are available at various levels starting at $250. In addition to tickets, tours, and public recognition, sponsors of $5,000 and up will receive a personalized family and friends “dig day” for up to 20 people at Fairfield plantation, one of Virginia’s most important archaeological sites.
“Cappahosic House has stood prominently overlooking the York River since the 1750s, and is a beautiful setting to celebrate our region’s remarkable history,” said Harpole.
The locally prominent Stubbs family is credited with building Cappahosic, owners of the property throughout the 18th century. The building was situated to take advantage of a popular ferry location across the York River and may have offered accommodations or respite to travelers. The form of this three-bay Georgian style home has not changed much over the years, and the interior retains many of its original architectural details. It is one of a handful of pre-Revolutionary War houses remaining in Gloucester.
The event will include access to the main floor of the house, information on archaeological findings at Cappahosic, and exhibits highlighting the Fairfield Foundation’s diverse preservation outreach and educational activities. All ticket sales and sponsorships will contribute to the creation of an archaeological park at Fairfield and the organization’s educational outreach activities.
