Canine Companions

Mathews residents Kristin and Ian Morse, from left, travelled to Medford, New York, on Friday, May 15 for the Canine Companions graduation/matriculation ceremonies. Their lab/golden retriever mix, Hobart, was placed with them as an eight-week-old puppy to learn good manners, basic commands and socialization skills in a loving home before being trained as a service dog. Now 17 months old, he began professional training with Canine Companions instructors on Monday and will be taught over 40 advanced commands that are useful to a person with disabilities, such as opening and closing doors, turning lights on and off, and picking up dropped items. After he graduates, Hobart will be placed with a person with disabilities....
