The four candidates for two seats on the Mathews County Board of Supervisors, and the two running for two seats on the Mathews County School Board, faced voters last Thursday night in a forum held at the Gwynn’s Island Civic Center.
An estimated 85 people filled the center for this, the final such session before the Nov. 4 election.
The forum was sponsored by the Gwynn’s Island Civic League and moderated by its president, Tyrone Hudgins. Questions of countywide issues, as well as island-specific concerns were sent in advance to the forum committee, and more were submitted from the audience. Each candidate had a time limit in which to respond.

Incumbents David Jones and Michael Walls, who are running for second terms on the board, and challengers David Walsh and Patrick Beattie showed many areas of agreement—and differed on others. Some questions addressed familiar topics, and some explored new territory.
