Cameron Stearns wins JV race in Milestat.com meet

Members of the Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams competed in four events at Saturday’s Milestat.com XC Invitational at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville.

While several personal records were set among the Blue Devil runners, the day’s biggest individual accomplishment went to eighth grader Cameron Stearns, who won the JV Boys 2 race outright with a time of 17:14.

The first race was the Varsity Girls B event. The first Blue Devil to cross the line was Abbie Hudgins in 21:46, finishing 60th. Close behind her was Brittany Ottarson (21:51). Next came Rileigh Betz (22:22), Skylar Lewis (22:24) and Jaysen Hall (22:28). Connie Johnson (22:34), Avery Betz (22:57) and Reilly Price (23:37) rounded out the team score. The girls came in 16th out of 23 teams, with a score of 377.

In the Varsity Boys B Race, the first Mathews runner to cross the line was Nasir Thomas, in 54th, with a time of 17:39, closely followed by Will Hutcheson (17:42). The next ...
