The Gloucester Historical Society has awarded this year’s Walter Reed Memorial Scholarship of $1,500 to Evan Cabral. The scholarship provides limited financial assistance to college students 3rd year or higher majoring in archaeology, anthropology, or history who are from Gloucester or have close ties here, a release said. For three years Cabral has worked for the Fairfield Foundation as a staff archaeologist at Fairfield Plantation, Edge Hill House, Machicomoco State Park, Timberneck House, Rosewell, Walter Reed’s Birthplace, and Abingdon Church. He has taken a lead role in three distinctly different projects working with the Mattaponi, Pamunkey, and Chickahominy tribes, the release said. In each instance, he helped shape the research design, fieldwork, labwork, and, most importantly, public/tribal engagement.
