C.H. Players to present youth version of ‘Fiddler’

“Fiddler on the Roof JR,” featuring a cast of over three dozen local youth, will be presented by the Court House Players from Friday through Sunday, Oct. 18-20, in the Harry M. Ward Auditorium at Mathews High School. Shows are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday.

This youth version of the classic hit “Fiddler on the Roof” tells the story of the poor dairyman Tevye, who tries to instill in his five strong-willed daughters the traditions of his tight-knit Jewish community in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. The show is known for its humor, warmth and honesty.
From the first rehearsal, Fiddler’s young performers have explored how the show touches on what life was like in pre-revolutionary Russia by examining such issues as tradition, tolerance, and faith, “all of which remain relevant today,” said a press release.

The original Broadway production of Fiddler was the first musical to surpass 3,000 performances and held the record for the longest-running Broadway show for 10 years. The junior version reprises many of the show’s beloved songs, including “Matchmaker,” “If I Were a Rich Man” and “Sunrise, Sunset.”

Tickets are $12 for adults and $7 for students and are available at CHP’s three ticket outlets—Office Supply and Franktronics in Gloucester and Mathews Pharmacy in Mathews—as well as online at courthouseplayers.org.
