BZA approves application for firearms business home occupation

The Gloucester County Board of Zoning Appeals approved an application for a special exception during a meeting July 22 in the colonial courthouse.

The board voted 4-1 in favor of applicant Peter W.T. Maxwell, who sought a special exception to the Gloucester Zoning Ordinance for establishment of a home occupation. Maxwell was seeking permission to repair and clean firearms at his residence, 7316 Our Way Lane.

No public comment was allowed at the July 22 meeting, as a public hearing had already been held on the matter in June. Since only four members were in attendance then, the board decided to postpone its vote until the July meeting. Maxwell said he will not keep any inventory of firearms or ammunition for sale on the property and no firearms will be test-fired at this location.

Maxwell’s property lies in the Abingdon Magisterial District and is zoned single-family detached residential (SF-1).
