Burleigh Road reconstruction project finished

A reconstruction project on Route 615 (Burleigh Road) in Gloucester County was completed May 29 and the detour lifted there after 2½ months.

Virginia Department of Transportation spokesperson Kelly Hannon said that the original schedule called for crews to be working between March 3 and May 22 in the area near the “S” curve on Burleigh Road just east of Route 616 (Belroi Road). That necessitated closing the road to through traffic in the work zone.

Crews removed soil, finished road construction work, and installed two new drainage pipes underneath the road, Hannon said.

Construction actually began in that area in late 2014, with one-lane, alternating traffic controlled by a flagging crew. But a complete road closure in that area was necessary to expedite construction there, Hannon said.

Approximately 1,900 vehicles travel Burleigh Road each day on average, according to a VDOT traffic count. ...
