The Friends of Machicomoco State Park is sponsoring a talk at 4 p.m. Monday at the Hayes park about bumble bee conservation.
Jennifer Weber, a pollinator ecologist from Virginia Tech’s Conservation Management Institute, will discuss the various species of bumble bees that inhabit the region. Bumble bees are important because they are highly effective pollinators of both wild plants and many food crops, playing a crucial role in the ecosystem by facilitating plant reproduction, which directly impacts food production and overall biodiversity, a release stated. The talk will include information on where to find and how to identify each species that are likely found in this part of Virginia.
The talk will be held at picnic shelter 2 in the park’s Interpretive Area. Founded in 2022, Friends of Machicomoco State Park is a member-led nonprofit organization which helps to support the park’s mission by enhancing visitor experience through a variety of volunteer-led projects and programs.
