110 YEARS AGO Thursday, Feb. 14, 1907 from the Mathews Journal Friday morning about 11 o’clock there came very near being a serious conflagration at the village school in Mobjack. People around were attracted by the violent ringing of the school bell. Fortunately the usual crowd was gathered at the post office waiting for mail, a “bucket brigade” was formed and 10 or 12 men responded promptly to the scene. They soon had the fire under control without any serious damage to the building, which was repaired at once. 90 YEARS AGO Thursday, Feb. 17, 1927 from the Mathews Journal The Mathews Junior Order, numbering over four hundred in membership, will serve to their members a big oyster supper at their Lodge Building on Wednesday night, Feb. 23.
