Brunswick stew, pie, more! Old Bohannon schoolhouse to host a fall festival

Mark October 25 on your calendars now for a day of festivities, food, fresh apple juice, music and just good old-fashioned fun, it’s the West Mathews Community League’s first Fall Festival.

In this part of Mathews still stands the old Peninsula High School, the only survivor of its era, having opened in 1913. The former schoolhouse is the home of the West Mathews league and it’s on these grounds you will step to the tunes of a bluegrass band and find pumpkins in abundance. You will also meet some of Mathews County’s best cooks, who have baked for days to ready their delicacies for sale. There will also be Brunswick stew by the quart to take home.

And there in the middle of all the activities you’ll find a gentleman cranking out fresh apple juice. “Bring your small milk bottle and get it filled with fresh apple juice,” said Page Herbert, who will be the tender of the old apple press, assisted by his wife Pat. “This is something we want...
