Brown, Small named MHS top grads

Valedictorian Carson Brown and salutatorian Joice Small will lead about 60 members of the Mathews High School Class of 2022 on Saturday morning as they cross the stage to receive their diplomas.

Mathews High School’s 83rd commencement will be held at 10 a.m. in the school’s Harry M. Ward Auditorium.

Carson Christopher Brown, the son of Michael and Lisa Burns-Brown of Mathews, achieved a grade point average of 4.65 during his time at Mathews High School to earn the top academic spot. He plans to attend Christopher Newport University in the fall.

Joice Rainier Small, the daughter of Craig and Katherine Small of Mathews, posted a GPA of 4.43 to be earn the title of salutatorian. She will continue her education at the University of Virginia.

Saturday’s program will begin with the Class of 2022 and faculty marching in while the MHS Symphonic Band, under the direction of conductor Timothy Fary, performs “Pomp and Circumstance.”
