Students from Broadwater Academy in Exmore on Virginia’s Eastern Shore won this year’s Blue Crab Bowl, a regional ocean science academic competition that is part of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl.

The Blue Crab Bowl, hosted by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science and held at the school’s Gloucester Point campus on Feb. 10 is part of a nationwide competition that tests students’ knowledge of ocean science disciplines through buzzer-style, multiple-choice questions and open-ended team challenge questions. Old Dominion University co-hosted the event.

Students on the championship team include Derek Boyle, Margot Custis, Virginia Custis, John Lewis and Sofi Rader. They are coached by Charles Carlson.
