Bridge work interrupts traffic but goes quickly

State transportation maintenance crews performed electrical-mechanical work at the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge early Sunday morning,

Jennifer Gwaltney, a spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Transportation, said that the work proceeded quicker than anticipated and the job was completed that morning.

A switch to position the bridge grate had to be replaced, Gwaltney said, and crews needed full directional traffic stops to accomplish the work.

The work began at 1:30 a.m. Sunday and was completed at 3:30, two hours ahead of the preliminary schedule.

Only two traffic stops were required for the work to be completed, not four as originally projected, Gwaltney said.

The work was scheduled early Sunday, she said, as that’s traditionally a period when traffic volume is lower and the impact to motorists is reduced.
