Bridge repair work to cause intermittent closures on Rt. 198

Intermittent closures will be in effect for portions of this week and next on Route 198 (Dutton Road) at the bridge over Harpers Creek in upper Gloucester County.

The project contractor, Bryant Contracting, Inc. of Toano, is in the midst of rehabilitating this structurally deficient bridge, said Kelly Hannon, a spokesperson for the Virginia Department of Transportation. The closures, with traffic stopped for 15-minute intervals, will be in effect for both directions between 9 a.m.-3 p.m. today and Friday and next Monday-Wednesday, Dec. 21-23.

The brief traffic stops, which were scheduled to begin Dec. 16, are needed to install and lock sheet piles into place using a crane, Hannon said.

As scheduled, the bridge will be re-opened every 15 minutes to allow waiting vehicles to proceed across the bridge, she said.
