Bridge closed to marine traffic

The Gwynn’s Island Bridge has been closed to boat traffic until further notice. Motorists can expect potential delays until 5 p.m. on Sunday, said a notice on 511virginia.org.

According to a press release from the Virginia Department of Transportation, the Route 223 bridge over Milford Haven that connects Gwynn’s Island to mainland Mathews needs additional work after mechanical equipment that operates the bridge’s movable swing span experienced a failure last Wednesday evening.

More information on the repair timeline is expected later this week, said VDOT Fredericksburg District Maintenance Administrator Joyce McGowan in response to an inquiry.

“We are in the process of finalizing our review and repairs in order to establish a reopening plan,” she said.
