Brazilian guitar quartet to play in Arts at Abingdon concert

The Quaternaglia Guitar Quartet from Brazil will perform at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15, in the third concert of the Arts at Abingdon Series. The concert will be held at Abingdon Episcopal Church on Route 17 in White Marsh. Admission is free, with a free-will offering accepted.

Quaternaglia Guitar Quartet is acclaimed as one of the world’s top guitar ensembles, said a press release. Composed of Brazilian guitarists Chrystian Dozza, Fabio Ramazzina, Thiago Abdalla and Sidney Molina, QGQ is recognized for its artistic excellence and for its significant contributions to the expansion of guitar quartet repertoire. Over the past 25 years, the group has established a canon of original pieces and ambitious arrangements.

The quartet first attracted the attention of international criticism when it was awarded the Ensemble Prize at the Havana International Guitar Contest in 1998. Since then, the group has regularly performed in various guitar and chamber series in the United States and the world. Quaternaglia’s California debut was praised by the Los Angeles Times.

The group has recorded seven albums since 1995, most recently the live DVD recording “Quaternagli” in 2006. It has performed in 15 American states and 17 Brazilian states as well as countries like Portugal, Spain, Australia, Cuba, Uruguay and Argentina.

Quaternaglia has also conducted Master Classes and lectures at various institutions, including Yale University, the Jacobs School of Music (Indiana University at Bloomington), and the Coimbra Conservatory.
