Boys’, girls’ squads both triumphant

Regional champs.

That moniker now applies to both the Mathews High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams following the teams’ performances last Thursday at the Group 1, Region A championships at the Eastern State course in Williamsburg.

The win gave the girls back-to-back regional titles; last year, the MHS boys finished second in the region.

Nine complete teams competed in the girls’ race: Mathews, Northumberland, Middlesex, Washington and Lee, West Point, Northampton, Lancaster, Essex and Rappahannock.

The first Lady Devil girl to cross the finish line was Abbie Hudgins, who came in fifth with a time of 22:59. She was immediately followed by Brittany Ottarson (23:04) in sixth place. Sisters Rileigh (23:19) and Avery Betz (24:07) were next, placing ninth and 12th, respectively. The team’s score was rounded out by Connie Johnson (24:35), Jaysen Hall (24:44) and Skylar Lewis (25:12). The Region A MVP was Jenifer Broglin of Washington and Lee.
