‘Books of Their Own’

The Kiwanis Club of Mathews, on behalf of the Mathews High School Key Club, recently applied for a grant from Hampton Roads Academy aimed at nonprofit organizations. The high school students at HRA are learning about how nonprofits operate and are offering grants up to $1,000 for nonprofit projects, said a press release. The MHS Key Club had started its own project to help younger students, titled “Books of Their Own.” The club will use the $500 provided in the awarded grant to continue next school year to provide each pre-school student in the Head Start classroom (located at MHS) a new book to take home each month. In a trial run, Key Club members (above) read to preschoolers and gave them books donated by Kiwanis members. The big kids, the little kids and the teachers have all been thrilled with the results, said the release. The club’s MHS sponsor is Kristin Morse
