Body of drowning victim found

The body of a 13-year-old Gloucester boy who went missing while swimming in the York River Friday off Gloucester Point Beach was found Sunday morning.

The Gloucester Sheriff’s Office said the body was found around 7:15 a.m. Sunday by someone walking on the beach in the Gloucester Point area, about half a mile from where the boy disappeared. 

The GSO said the body was sent to the state medical examiner’s office, where it was positively identified on Wednesday morning as Chandler Shetterly, 13, of Gloucester.

Friends and family members held a vigil at Gloucester Point Beach Monday evening for the missing boy (See related story).

Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue said it was dispatched for a missing person at Gloucester Point Beach at 4:22 p.m. Friday. A 13-year-old male who was not wearing a flotation device was last seen playing in the water near the fishing pier with his siblings.

AVFR personnel were unable to locate the child and called for additional resources....
