Boating safety class to be held Oct. 16

Members of the Mathews-based Flotilla 66 Auxiliary, United States Coast Guard, will instruct a free "Boat Virginia" boating class Oct. 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad building, Hudgins.

Auxiliary spokesperson Tom Edwards said the course satisfies the Virginia Boating Safety Education requirements for all operators of recreational boats and personal watercraft.

Personal watercraft operators age 50 or younger and motorboat operators age 20 or younger (operating vessels 10 hp and greater) must have their Virginia Boating Certificate by July 1, 2011, Edwards said.

All course materials and instruction by Flotilla 66 state certified instructors is free.

The class will cover topics such as knowing your boat, operating your boat safely, the legal requirements of boating, what to do and what not to do during boating emergencies, and enjoying water sports with your boat.
