Boatbuilding shed to have ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday

The community built the shed so the students could build the boats. This time last year, the Northern Neck Wooden Boat School was hoping and planning for a new building. Thanks to the diligence of co-founders David Clark and Katie Wilkins and a cadre of volunteers, the group will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new building on Monday. Called a bow shed, the space is directly next to Northumberland Middle School. “The intention is to house our summer and after-school boatbuilding programs,” said Wilkins, who has taught boatbuilding in the classroom for many years. Thirteen students in middle or high school attended this year’s summer boatbuilding camp, which was offered at no cost to anyone who wanted to attend, said Wilkins. The class met Mondays and Wednesday mornings. It started May 18 and will end June 24.
